The Big Horn Mountains are only 15 minutes away, and offer over 1,200 miles of trails, and 189,000 acres of streams, peaks, meadows & forest. There are 30 maintained campgrounds, 3 scenic byways, and 10 picnic areas, with primitive camping available almost everywhere!

With more thank 1,200 miles of trails and 189,000 acres of peaks, meadows, creeks and forests, the Big Horn Mountains are a perfect place to play!

  • Paths range from easy to expert and will take you along some of the most gorgeous scenery you’ll ever experience.
  • Some of the more difficult trails will require your climbing skills, as the mountain cliffs have quickly become a magnet for experienced rock climbers.
  • The Cloud Peak Wilderness area is great for those on foot or horseback, as no mechanized vehicles are allowed. This hidden gem is also where you’ll find wildlife, wildflowers and some of the best birdwatching available.

Leisure Activities

Enjoy an easy drive through Crazy Woman Canyon, or through the mountains on over to Ten Sleep, take a dip into Tie Hack reservoir, or take some of the beautiful side roads in the Bighorn Mountains! Whether you want to camp, hike, ride horses, bring your RV, ride your ATV, do some fishing, hunt, rock climb, or enjoy some intense photo opportunities, it's here!

  • Tie Hack Reservoir - 30 minutes to a beautiful lake, nestled in the Bighorns!
  • Loaf Mountain Overlook - 25 minutes from Buffalo on Highway 16, just past the North entrance of Elgin Park Road. Photographers and anyone wanting to see beautiful views of our peaks should stop for a few minutes along the way!

  • Crazy Woman Canyon - 2hrs to 3.5hrs of beautiful canyon & mountains, looping back to Buffalo!
  • Elgin Park Road - Take a drive or pick a camping spot in this beautiful loop through the forest and prairies! Elgin Park Road is a loop, and from Buffalo, the 2 entrances from Highway 16 are roughly 23 minutes, and 26 minutes).
  • Ten Sleep, Wyoming - About 1 hour from Buffalo, and on the way to/from Cody, Wyoming via Highway 16. Between Buffalo & Ten Sleep, you'll enjoy views of the amazing Ten Sleep Canyon, the Bighorn Mountains, Meadowlark Lake and many scenic turnouts!

Hiking, Camping, Horses & More

The Bighorns have an abundance of camping locations, from official campgrounds and RV pull ins, to those that can be found by blazing your own trail and backpacking in.

The traditional camping spots are labeled and accompany signposts with ORV roads.

Should you choose to park and backpack in a ways, all of the Bighorn terrain offers some of the best adventures and views in the world! Some of the most mesmerizing views are only found after a two day hike.

Please keep in mind that entering certain (especially high-risk areas) of the wilderness, may require registration and adherence to regulations.

  • Ten Sleep, Wyoming - About 1 hour from Buffalo, and on the way to/from Cody, Wyoming via Highway 16. Between Buffalo & Ten Sleep, you'll enjoy views of the amazing Ten Sleep Canyon, the Bighorn Mountains, Meadowlark Lake and many scenic turnouts!

The Big Horn Mountains are irresistible for winter sports! Only minutes from downtown, but feels like you're miles and miles away!
