Lake Desmet is large, beautiful lake only 10-15 minutes from Buffalo! At the lake, we have boating, kayaking, canoeing, fishing and much more! In the winter months, Lake Desmet offers excellent ice fishing, and our annual New Year's Day celebration, the Polar Plunge, where locals jump into the ice-cold frozen lake!

The Jim Gatchell Museum, named after the first drugstore owner in Johnson County, is AAM®-Accredited, and a Blue Star museum, right here in Buffalo! Enjoy an hour or two viewing the exhibits, or just stop into their gift shop!
Looking for a fun evening? The Occidental, coined locally as "The Ox", has music almost every night! Buffalo's most prominent downtown hotel was founded in 1880 & has lots of history! They also have a museum, open for tours.
The Brinton Museum features a large property honoring the Native American heritage in the surrounding areas. The Brinton also features a wide variety of western artists, including Charlie Russell and others. Enjoy lunch at the on-site bistro.
Our local wool mill processes everything from the grower, to the product! Tour the wool mill, and learn how they work, from local ranchers, to their distribution and final products! While you're at Mountain Meadow Wool Mill, be sure to check out their gift shop!

Ten Sleep, Wyoming is about an hour from Buffalo, through the beautiful Bighorn Mountains! The name comes from the "number of sleeps" it would take between Buffalo & Ten Sleep. You'll enjoy driving through Ten Sleep Canyon, which attracts rock climbers & enthusiasts, from around the world!

Spend a couple hours and take a ride through our beautiful, Crazy Woman Canyon! One of our most beautiful features in Johnson County. Cars, trucks & SUVs only, this drive is very suitable for most family vehicles.
Our local golf course is revered statewide, labeled "Wyoming's Best Municipal Golf Course", and also contested as the best, or 2nd best course in Wyoming!
Buffalo has some of the best horseback riding available! Ride through the forest, and enjoy the mountain views & the peaks! For quick rides of 1-2 hourse, you have several options (see below). For longer rides, we have breathtaking mountain lakes and multi-day pack trips available via our local outfitters!
Horseback Riding
Buffalo, via HWY 16 is the shortest and most scenic way to get to Yellowstone National Park! Once you're in Buffalo, it's just over 4 hours to Yellowstone!
Hitting the slopes is a favorite pastime in this area, and people flock from all over to enjoy the incredible powder. The Bighorn Mountain Ski Area offers challenging runs, along with the hospitable Meadowlark Ski Lodge. Bring your own gear or rent equipment at the Lodge. Enjoy 14 different runs, ranging from beginner to intermediate and advanced. After an invigorating day on the slopes, cozy up to the fireplace and enjoy the Lodge’s restaurant and full service bar. With over 300 acres of ski area, and the Lodge’s ability to make snow if needed, there’s no better place for your winter getaway!
